Sachin Tendulkar to be honoured with Bharat Ratna

Just hours after the legendary batsman bid goodbye to cricket, it was decided that Sachin Tendulkar would be awarded with the highest civilian honour – Bharat Ratna. With this, Tendulkar has become the first sportsperson to receive the biggest honour possible for any Indian.

"Sachin Tendulkar is undoubtedly an outstanding cricketer - a living legend who has inspired millions across the globe," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's office said in a statement.

"During the last 24 years, since the young age of 16 years, Tendulkar has played cricket across the world and won laurels for our country.

"He has been a true ambassador of India in the world of sports. His achievements in cricket are unparalleled, the records set by him unmatched, and the spirit of sportsmanship displayed by him exemplary.

"That he has been honoured with several awards is testimony to his extraordinary brilliance as a sportsman."

Apart from Tendulkar, eminent scientist CNR Rao, the man behind Indian's Mars Mission, has also been conferred the Bharat Ratna.

The issue of awarding Sachin Tendulkar with Bharat Ratna has been a topic of discussion for over two years. Apart from popular cricketers, most of the political parties had also backed the call for conferring Tendulkar the highest civilian honour.

The 40-year-old icon, who called time on his glittering international career on Saturday, was chosen for the top award soon after his farewell Test against the West Indies ended in Mumbai.

A brief statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson Venu Rajamony said the President has awarded the Bharat Ratna to Tendulkar, who retired from the International cricket today.

The Bharat Ratna is being conferred after a gap of years with classical vocalist Pandit Bhimsen Joshi being the last recipient.

Brands stand by Sachin Tendulkar as he announces retirement

Paying tribute to Sachin Tendulkar, who announced his retirement after playing his 200th test against the West Indies next month, brands endorsed by him are standing by him saying the cricketer's retirement will not affect their endorsement deals.

The show will go on for Brand Tendulkar for many more years even after the curtains come down on his cricketing career on November 18, said advertising, marketing and brand pundits on the day the Master Blaster announced his decision to retire from cricket.

Tendulkar made his debut against Pakistan in 1989 and his journey with Indian brands started almost immediately, picking up the first few endorsement deals in 1990 for health supplement Boost and Band-Aid from Johnson & Johnson. Tendulkar may play his last match on the fifth day of his 200th Test match in Mumbai.
Across 24 years, Tendulkar is estimated to have endorsed over 50 brands including Boost, Pepsi, MRF, Adidas, Britannia, Fiat Palio, Airtel, Sanyo BPL and Coca-Cola with accumulated endorsement fees over Rs 500 crore. His prominent business deals included the Rs 30-crore plus with WorldTel in 1995 which was renewed in 2001 with more than double the price tag of Rs 80 crore. In 2006, Tendulkar inked a contract with advertising firm Saatchi and Saatchi’s Iconix which was reportedly valued at Rs 180 crore for three years.
World Sports Group (WSG) has been managing Tendulkar’s brand endorsements since 2006, when his contract with WorldTel ended.
Adidas, Coca Cola, Future Group, Toshiba, Aviva India, and SAR Group, which are endorsed by the master blaster, said they were looking for longer association with him after retirement.
"Sachin Tendulkar is with Adidas for life. Whether he plays cricket or not will not affect our relationship. We have had very strong ties with him and he is very special," Adidas India Brand Director Tushar Goculdas said.
Expressing similar sentiments, Coca Cola India said: "He is an icon of happiness much like Coca-Cola, and we will continue to look towards him for spreading happiness in the country."
Tendulkar has been promoting the company's campaign for the cause of the education of the girl child as the face of 'Support My School'.

Team India to start the season with a new jersey

Rajkot: The Indian cricket team will kick off the new season in a brand new limited-overs kit, which was unveiled by the BCCI official apparel partner Nike on the eve of the series against Australia, starting at Rajkot on Thursday.

Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said the new kit has been prepared with advices from the cricketers.

“This particular jersey, a lot of feedback came from the players as to what they actually wanted in their jersey and I hope it has been incorporated,” says Dhoni.

"The colour and design is good. It fits well. It is light weight and stretchable, which is good as you can dive on the ground. It is the Indian jersey so we feel proud every time we wear it," all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja said.

The jersey has been made out of 100 per cent recycled polyester fabric."The jersey is made of polyester, which has been recycled from plastic bottles. Obviously since it is made of recycled plastic, one good thing is that it is going to be really good for the environment, which is a positive. It is lighter and it is the first time polyester has been used in our team jersey," off-spinner R Ashwin said.
Meanwhile, the Indian squad is all geared-up to face Australia in a T20 on today evening at Rajkot.
