Samsung Galaxy S4 Crystal Edition announced, available in limited numbers

Samsung has been famous for launching its Galaxy smartphones in new avatars, or variants, and following the tradition, the South Korean manufacturer has now announced the Galaxy S4 Crystal Edition.
As of now, the 2013 flagship smartphone variant is only available via Samsung Thailand and has been priced at 20,300 Thai bahts, which translates to roughly Rs. 38,700. Notably, Samsung Thailand's site clearly mentions that the Galaxy S4 Crystal Edition is available in limited numbers i.e. 3,500 units.

Unfortunately, there is no word on the release of the Galaxy S4 Crystal Edition outside Thailand markets. The highlight of the new Galaxy S4 variant is that it features Swarovski crystals studded at the back.

Under the hood we assume that the Galaxy S4 Crystal Edition has similar specifications as the original variant.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 was globally launched in March this year. However, the device landed in India only in April with a price tag of Rs. 41,500.

The device sports a 5-inch full-HD display with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels, and pixel density of 441ppi. It is powered by 1.6GHz Exynos octa-core processor alongside 2GB of RAM and runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. The Galaxy S4 sports a 13-megapixels rear shooter and a 2-megapixel one on the front.

Earlier in September, Samsung launched the Galaxy S4 Gold Edition for limited markets that majorly included the Gulf countries.

Recently, Samsung announced the Galaxy Note 3 phablet with new paint jobs that included the Rose Gold White, Rose Gold Black and Merlot Red colour variants.

Sammobile has revealed in a report that the South Korean manufacturer will announce both the Galaxy Note 3 Lite and Galaxy Grand Lite smartphones next year at MWC.
As per the report, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lite would hit the markets by February-end or early-March, while the Galaxy Grand Lite is expected to be available in the first week of February, however, no specific markets or regions were mentioned in the report.

Further, the report claims that the alleged Galaxy Note 3 Lite would come with SM-N7505 model number and will be available in Black and White colour variants initially. For the specifications of the rumoured Galaxy Note 3, the report claims that the company has been testing two different display sizes, 5.5-inch and 5.7-inch, while the screen technology is said to be changed from Super AMOLED to LCD. Further the report speculates that the alleged Galaxy Note 3 Lite would share features much like the Galaxy S4 Active.

On the other hand, the rumoured Samsung Galaxy Grand Lite is said to have the GT-I9060 model number. The report also reveals some of the specifications of the Galaxy Grand Lite which include a 5-inch WVGA display; 1.2GHz quad-core processor; 1GB of RAM; 8GB of inbuilt storage and supports expandable storage and a 2100mAh battery. The report also claims that the major difference between the Galaxy Grand and the Galaxy Grand Lite would be the camera and Android version.

The Galaxy Grand Lite is said to sport a 5-megapixel rear camera and also could come with a VGA front camera. Further, the report claims that the alleged Galaxy Grand Lite is expected to run Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and will be a dual-SIM smartphone, as its predecessors. The alleged Galaxy Grand Lite is likely to be available in Midnight Black, Lime Green, Orange and White colour variants.

There is no word on the official pricing of both Galaxy Note 3 Lite and Galaxy Grand Lite in the report. Recently, Samsung announced the Galaxy Grand 2 mid-range smartphone globally. The South Korean handset maker has not revealed the price for Galaxy Grand 2 and has also not announced the availability details for the smartphone.

New iPhone 6 Concept Features Three-Sided Display

The iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c may only have been available for two months, but that’s not going to stop us looking ahead to what Apple might have up its sleeve for next year. We’ve already been treated to a bunch of iPhone 6 concepts to accompany the early rumors pertaining the next Cupertino smartphone, and a series of renders recently offered by designer Iskander Utebayev feature an interesting three-sided display.

The concept puts quick launch icons on the side display along with controls for the music player. The rest of the phone keeps the current form factor and design of the Apple iPhone 5s. While amazing as this looks, even if Samsung pulls this out of its hat in 2014, Apple is apparently more concerned with increasing the size of the glass on the next iPhone. Just the other day, word leaked out that Apple was working on a 4.9 inch version of its iconic smartphone, for next year. That isn't the first report that we've seen about a larger screened iPhone heading for consumers in 2014.

Though most reports about the iPhone 6 mention a larger screen, IBTimes doubts Apple will release an iPhone with a larger screen in 2014. Rumors of larger-screen iPhones are nothing new; in fact, Apple experiments with iPhone prototypes of all shapes and sizes, so while the reports of a larger iPhone prototype may be accurate, this in no way means Apple actually plans to release such a phone, especially in 2014.

Apple has several patents for curved screen designs for the iPhone, but news companies like Bloomberg believes Apple will actually release these technologies in time for the iPhone 6. According to “a person familiar with the plans,” Apple will release the iPhone 6 “with glass that curves downward at the edges,” and again reiterated the iPhone’s possible 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screen sizes.

The iPhone 6 will launch in a number of different storage capacities, although rumour has it the company will scrap the 16GB version and offer the device with 32GB, 64GB and 128GB capacities. We expect the iPhone 6 to be the top-level iPhone and as such, it will probably have a flagship price. It’s thought the device will be released in 2014 but there’s no word on exactly when that will be as yet.

LG's G Flex Smartphone Magically Heals itself - Even after a knife attack

One of the unique features of the LG G Flex is not only its curved display, but the fact that LG has advertised that the phone comes with self-healing powers in which scratches made to the back of the phone will be able to heal itself and magically disappear, making it look as though your phone is brand new.

YouTube user Marques Brownlee posted a video of him scarring the back of the upcoming curved Android phone, the G Flex. After scratching the phone, the G Flex starts repairing the scratch itself. The future is here, and it’s real.

Like magic, scratches from even a knife slowly disappear into the casing. Heat helps speed up the healing process, too, so rubbing your hands on the cover minimizes scratches much more quickly. You can push the sides of the curved display, essentially flattening it out before it slowly resumes its natural bended position.

LG released a video earlier last week that showed off the healing powers of the G Flex. While the technology behind this “magic” remains unknown for now, LG did clarify that this will only work with light scratches that might occur on a day-to-day basis, such as scratching against coins or keys in your pocket, as opposed to deep scratches that might be the result of a drop on the pavement.

But the real showstopper is in how the device lives up to its name by keeping its form factor even when very heavy weights are placed upon it. The heavy load flattens the G Flex out, but when lifted, the handset very quickly reverts back to shape.

LG has yet to reveal exactly how the scratch-proofing works, although it is reckoned by some that small amounts of resin are embedded into the material and, when scratched, simply fills the cracks.

Verizon Moto X comes with Android KitKat 4.4

Taking some in the Android community by surprise, Motorola has announced that the KitKat 4.4 update is rolling out for the Moto X smartphone on Verizon before any of the competition.
In a blog post on the company’s website, Motorola's SVP of software engineering, Steve Horowitz, confirmed that the update will be “rolling out in phases to the Moto X on Verizon Wireless starting today.”
KitKat 4.4 offers improved support for mobile payment systems, including NFC and Square's credit card reader, a restyled navigation menu and a very handy “Find My Phone” feature that allows the user to initialize a search for a lost handset via voice control.
The new style of transparent navigation area is included, along with the white icon set in the notification area and transparent background. You’ll find a new dialer, updated camera icon, tweaked notification quick toggles, better location management, new Clock app, and that famous mosaic style Easter Egg. Tap & pay and Printing are now included in the settings as well, though Google Wallet still isn’t playing nice. I’m wondering if Google needs to push an update to Wallet to make it play nice with other Kit Kat devices.
One thing that is most definitely missing is the new Google Experience Launcher, but you shouldn’t have expected it to be there. Google already told us that the GEL was a Nexus 5 exclusive, so when you jump into the app drawer on the Moto X with Android 4.4, you will still see Widgets included; a long press on the home screen will also still only get you into a wallpaper picker.
Other enhancements included in the update include color emojis, an improved phone dialer, a drag-to-focus interface feature for the camera app and new photo gallery effects.

Samsung to Release Galaxy Smartphone With Three-Sided Display

Samsung is reportedly planning to release a Galaxy smartphone with a three-sided display that wraps around the edges of the device, reports Bloomberg. Citing people supposedly familiar with Samsung's plans, Bloomberg says the South Korean handset maker is planning to release a Galaxy smartphone with a three-sided display sometime in 2014. The display will wrap around the edges so that users can read messages and notifications from virtually any angle.

The phone will use an upgraded version of Samsung’s technology called Youm, currently featured in the curved Galaxy Round handset, the people said, asking not to be identified because the plans haven’t been released. The display may be used in the S or Note series of premium handsets or may be the first in a new line, the people said. Samsung plans to have each side of the display operate independently,” allowing users to view, for example, messages or stock info at a glance along the edge of the device.

Samsung unveiled a prototype of its Youm flexible display technology at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Youm uses OLED display technology, and is designed to bring out better colours and contrast with an extremely thin form factor.

Brian Berkeley, the senior vice president of Samsung's display lab, showed off a prototype of a phone with a Youm display bent around the sides at CES. He said the technology will let the company's partners make bendable, rollable, and foldable displays.

That's not all Samsung has on its roadmap for next year, as the firm has already revealed that it will launch a smartphone with a 2K display in 2014, which will measure 5.2in and boast 2560x1440 resolution and a pixel density of 560ppi.

It's unclear when Samsung's rumoured smartphone with a wraparound display will make its debut, but Bloomberg's sources said it's unlikely to appear until the second-half of 2014. However, with Apple reportedly planning two curved iPhones for next year, it's likely that Samsung will be looking to beat its rival to market.

Nokia Lumia 1820 smartphone, Lumia 2020 tablet due at MWC 2014

According to a report, Nokia will be launching its next tablet dubbed Lumia 2020 alongside the Lumia 1820 smartphone, at MWC 2014.

Nokia Power User has revealed that Nokia will be expanding its tablet line-up with the launch of the Lumia 2020, believed to be the 8-inch tablet previously leaked with the codename Illusionist.

Earlier, a report had suggested the same specifications for the Illusionist tablet, saying it would feature an 8-inch display. The report also claimed that the alleged Nokia Illusionist tablet would be powered by a Qualcomm processor and would run Windows RT 8.1.
Further, the tipster suggests that the Lumia 2020 will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and would also feature full-HD resolution display (just like the Lumia 2520). This would mean the Lumia 2020 will have a higher pixel density when compared to Lumia 2520 tablet, and in addition would come with stylus support. If the rumour turns out to be true, the alleged Nokia Lumia 2020 tablet would become the first tablet from Nokia to come with stylus support.
Nokia already forayed into the tablet segment with the launch of its first Windows RT tablet, the Lumia 2520 at Nokia World in October. The Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet runs Windows RT 8.1 and comes with a 10.1-inch full-HD IPS LCD display that boasts of enhanced outdoor readability and Corning Gorilla Glass 2.
Moreover, the tipster reveals that Nokia Lumia 1820 will be company’s next imaging flagship smartphone and would sport metal unibody design. The tipster suggests the alleged Lumia 1820 would feature a Lytro-style camera, which will allow users to refocus images even after they are clicked. There is no word on other features of the rumoured Lumia 1820 smartphone.

Made by ex-Nokians, the first Jolla Phone will be released on November 27

A few disgruntled MeeGo-loving ex-Nokians founded this company called Jolla and vowed to bring to the world the next smartphone based (loosely) on the OS that was once a joint-venture between the famous Finnish phone maker and Intel.

MeeGo startup Jolla has just announced that its first smartphone will go on sale in Finland on November 27th. Its first Sailfish OS device is a mid-range handset with a dual-core chip, 4G, 4.5-inch display, LTE, an 8-megapixel camera, 16GB of internal storage, and microSD card slot, an 8MP auto focus camera, a user-replaceable battery and interchangeable backplates that can influence the UI’s look and feel.

Jolla's phone will be priced at €399 (roughly $535 including sales tax), which is considerably more than similar devices, but the Finnish company is hoping the draw of a new OS will win consumers in its home country over.

The first 450 phones (yes, just 450 – no typo there) will go on sale on November 27 at a DNA pop-up shop in central Helsinki. DNA is a Finnish carrier, and one of the first companies to back the Jolla project, so this makes sense obviously.

The aforementioned pop-up shop will only be selling Jolla devices for one evening, after which there will be a wider launch in early December, also through DNA stores (more of them, this time). Around 50,000 units of the Jolla smartphone are reported to have been pre-ordered, although an official number isn’t available.

“Jolla has attracted an enormous amount of interest. Because the basic idea with Jolla is to develop the phone in co-creation spirit with the users, it seemed like the right thing to offer the first phones to those who had displayed an interest in them as soon as the first phones become available,” said DNA’s Business Director Cedric Kamtsan in a statement.

There's no word on a precise launch date outside of Finland yet, but the company has previously said it aims to sell its device across Europe before the end of 2013.

Samsung pushes its own New Mobile OS -Tizen

The Android and the iPhone ecosystems generate profit for Google and Apple every time smartphone users purchase a game or application. So now Samsung wants to expand its control beyond hardware to software, by building its own mobile operating system, called Tizen.

The South Korean electronics giant is in a quiet push to make its Tizen operating system a part of the technology lexicon as familiar as Google’s Android or Apple’s iOS. Its ambition doesn’t stop there. Samsung sees the software in your car, fridge and television too.

The first developer conference in Asia for Tizen wrapped up Tuesday after a two-day run, bringing together app developers and Tizen backers from Samsung, Intel and mobile operators.

Samsung did not announce a Tizen device, but it made a pitch for developers to create apps for the mobile operating system that is yet to be seen in the market. Samsung promised to give out $4 million cash to the creators of the best Tizen apps.
“With only hardware, its influence is limited,” said Kang Yeen-kyu, an associate research fellow at state-run Korea Information Society Development Institute. “Samsung’s goal is to establish an ecosystem centered on Samsung.”
Choi Jong-deok, Samsung’s executive vice president overseeing Tizen, said a launch of Tizen phone or televisions will happen “very shortly,” analysts said Samsung is unlikely to reveal the first Tizen device until February of next year, when the company said it will announce winners of its Tizen app contest.

Apple rumored to be Developing Curved IPhone Screens, New Sensors

The new iPhone could look like, left, and current iPhone design
Apple Inc is developing new iPhone designs including bigger screens with curved glass and enhanced sensors that can detect different levels of pressure, Bloomberg reported on Sunday, citing a unnamed person familiar with the plans.

Two models planned for release in the second half of next year would feature larger displays with glass that curves downward at the edges, said the person, declining to be identified because the details aren’t public. Sensors that can distinguish heavy or light touches on the screen may be incorporated into subsequent models, the person said.
With screens of 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches, the two new models would be Apple’s largest iPhones, the person said, and would approach in size the 5.7-inch Galaxy Note 3 that Samsung Electronics Co. debuted in September. The South Korean maker last month released its curved-screen Galaxy Round, the latest phone in an array of sizes and price points that’s helping keep Samsung ahead of Apple in global market share.
Apple last changed the iPhone's form factor in 2012 with the iPhone 5, upping screen size from 3.5 inches to 4 inches. Instead of increasing the phone's width, Apple chose to stretch the screen's height, and boasted that the larger screen still allowed for easy one-handed operation. This year's two new iPhone models, the 5c and 5s, both kept the same 4-inch Retina display.
The new Apple handsets are still in development and plans haven’t been completed, the person said, adding that the company probably would release them in the third quarter of next year.

Samsung Galaxy S5 - The Next BIG Thing

The upcoming Galaxy S5 will feature a 16MP camera packed with Samsung's Isocell technology, which focuses on capturing crisp, high-quality images, according to a new report.

Isocell technology ensures better light sensitivity on backside illuminated (BSI) sensors and delivers more natural colours as well as better low-light performance. The company has also revealed that its 16MP Isocell sensors will have 1.12micron pixels, lower than the ones in the new Apple iPhone 5S.

The company will launch the world's first smartphone with a bendable screen next year. Samsung suggested that Galaxy S5 features may include a foldable screen display boasting a 2,560 x 1,440 pixel resolution.
Samsung itself hinted the inclusion of such a feature on its annual Analyst Day. Samsung suggested that it will introduce the world's first Ultra High Definition 4K smartphones as early as 2015. Samsumg also hinted that 2,560 x 1,440 WQHD panels may make its debut on the Samsung Galaxy S5 next year, according toTrusted Reviews.
The new flexible displays are expected to replace the traditional LCD displays in current Samsung devices by 2015-2016. This technology opens a lot of possibilities in Samsung devices. Although unspecified by Samsung, the company can now make a tablet that can be transformed into a smartphone when folded.
A new exciting rumor claims that the Samsung Galaxy S5 could pack 4GB of RAM to go with its 64-bit Exynos processor, according to a new report by Korean site Digital Times.
The Digital Times report also added the the Galaxy S5 could release in "the first half of next year," which is a little surprising considering recent release date rumors suggested the smartphone could launch as soon as January.
However, some reports claimed that the smartphone will have a futuristic eye scanner. Also, along with a boosted battery life, the Samsung Galaxy S5 may come pre-installed with Android 4.4 KitKat that will herald new and improved features.

Apple's 13-inch iPad will reportedly debut in March

This is one of those rumors that we really wish would die, but it still keeps popping up. It surfaced last in May of this year, when a rumor suggested Apple’s 12.9-inch iPad was on schedule to launch sometime next year. The often-correct news site, 9to5Mac labeled the rumor ridiculous, but a new rumor today suggests that the device is in testing.

A “king-sized” iPad device is reportedly being tested in Apple’s Taiwanese manufacturing plant FoxConn, Apple Insider is reporting, citing a Chinese media news site. The latest reports were published by PadNews.

The Apple 12.9 inch iPad is expected to be released next year and a report is saying that tests are already happening at Foxconn and that the product is coming in March next year. As usual, we advise you to take everything with a grain of salt, if possible. However, the latest leaks concerning Apple tablets, especially the iPad Air, since all the components that hit the web were the real deal.

The company is said to be targeting a March 2014 unveiling for the "iPad maxi" which would expand past its 9.7-inch iPad and the 7.9-inch iPad mini. The large tablet would be more powerful and could become Apple’s second-largest revenue driver after the iPhone, Mr Reitzes said. Specifications for the new tablet weren't named, but the rumour comes as Samsung is said to be releasing a Galaxy Note tablet similar in size.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet Launches with Curved Handle

Lenovo has launched two new Android tablets, the Yoga 8-inch and Yoga 10-inch. The Lenovo Yoga 8-inch tablet comes at $249 (Rs. 15,200 approximately) while the Lenovo Yoga 10-inch tablet has been priced at $299 (Rs. 18,300 approximately) weighing in at 0.88 pounds and 1.33 pounds respectively.  The tablets have been launched in the US, and for now, no global availability details have been released.

Both the newly announced tablets sports Lenovo's multimode feature, offering  three modes: Hold (for, well holding the tablet), Stand (for propping it up, say, for a video) and Tilt, which may be the best way to enter data with your fingers. The tablet is designed with a kickstand on the back and a cylindrical battery that Lenovo claims can last up to 18 hours, at least when you're reading.

Both devices have an MT8125 SoC, usually seen in budget tablets, which run Android 4.2.2 on a modest quad-core 1.2GHz Cortex-A7 with 1GB of RAM. Lenovo has chosen a strange Android skin that more closely resembles iOS than Android, with apps covering the home screens rather than tucked inside an app launcher. Almost surprisingly, the OS feels fast and responsive, with impressive scrolling rendering in both the default browser and Chrome. Both tablets have low-res 1280 x 800 resolution screens, although both colors and viewing angles are fairly impressive.

The machines come with 16GB or 32GB of memory, which can be expanded via microSD. Each has a 1.6 megapixel front camera along with a 5 megapixel rear camera.

Lenovo also roped in Ashton Kutcher as its new brand ambassador. Commenting on the launch, Liu Jun, senior vice president and president, Lenovo Business Group, Lenovo said, "Watching and discovering that people frequently use tablets in three main ways allowed us to break the mold on the current 'sea of sameness' designs, giving them a better way to read, browse, watch and interact with content. As consumers' continue to demand innovative multimode designs we're thrilled to have Ashton Kutcher on board with us to help further develop the immersive and complementary hardware and rich content experience."

It's Happening: Build your own smartphone and decide what your phone does, how it looks and how much it costs.

Google's Motorola has unveiled Project Ara, “to develop a phone platform that is modular, open, customizable, and made for the entire world".

The idea behind the project, led by Motorola's Advanced Technology and Projects group, is to turn almost everything in a smartphone — display, keyboard, battery, processor — into a module that can be replaced.

"We want to do for hardware what the Android platform has done for software: create a vibrant third-party developer ecosystem, lower the barriers to entry, increase the pace of innovation, and substantially compress development timelines," said  Motorola Advanced Technology and Projects group, Project Ara Team.

Motorola have recognised the opportunity for innovation and personalisation.  They want to give you, the user the power to decide what your phone does, how it looks and how much it costs.

Motorola will be working with Phoneblocks, which recently showed off a similarly ambitious concept for modular smartphones; the Google-owned hardware manufacturer says that it plans to engage with the Phoneblocks community throughout the development process and help realize the same idea with its technical expertise.

Currently the project consists of an endoskeleton (endo) and modules.  The modules fit into the endo and hold all the pieces in place. These modules can be anything from processors to batteries to something that has yet to be designed.

Motorola plans has planned an alpha release of the Module Developer's Kit (MDK) for winter and says that it will also send an invitation to developers to start creating modules for the Ara platform.

Google Nexus 5 hardware details leaked by Canadian carrier

Google’s LG-made, plastic-backed Nexus 5 smartphone, possibly one of the most leaked as-yet-unannounced handsets ever, will be available in white as well as black, as yet another leak has revealed.

Twitter user EVLeaks, which has leaked images of several gadgets in the past, has released an image of the black and white model of Google's next flagship smartphone, along with the alleged launch date for the device. Several images of the Nexus 5 have been leaked on the internet previously.

Earlier, Google accidentally listed the device on the Play Store, along with its pricing.

The Nexus 5 was rumoured to be launched on October 28, but recent reports have pointed out that the launch has been postponed till November. A November 1 launch date would mean that the unveiling of Nexus 5 would clash with the launch of the new iPads. Apple will also launch the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C in India on the same day.

The Nexus 5 - of either hue - will contain a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon chip running at up to 2.3GHz and equipped with 2GB of RAM to play around with, as well as a 4.95-inch, 1920 x 1080 display to draw pictures on.

There’s nothing particularly impressive about that spec - confirmed through a, yes, leaked service manual - so the real interest in the Nexus 5 lies in the fact that it will run the next major version of Android, 4.4 Kit-Kat.

The LTE-connected Nexus 5’s choice of colours seems decidedly conservative in comparison with Apple’s rainbow range of iPhone 5Cs, though if the rumours that the latter aren’t selling so well are to be believed perhaps Google and LG are right to follow the very well-trodden monochrome path.

Google and LG will undoubtedly be hoping to supplant the 5C with their own offering - whenever it finally gets an official unveiling and release date.
