Made by ex-Nokians, the first Jolla Phone will be released on November 27

A few disgruntled MeeGo-loving ex-Nokians founded this company called Jolla and vowed to bring to the world the next smartphone based (loosely) on the OS that was once a joint-venture between the famous Finnish phone maker and Intel.

MeeGo startup Jolla has just announced that its first smartphone will go on sale in Finland on November 27th. Its first Sailfish OS device is a mid-range handset with a dual-core chip, 4G, 4.5-inch display, LTE, an 8-megapixel camera, 16GB of internal storage, and microSD card slot, an 8MP auto focus camera, a user-replaceable battery and interchangeable backplates that can influence the UI’s look and feel.

Jolla's phone will be priced at €399 (roughly $535 including sales tax), which is considerably more than similar devices, but the Finnish company is hoping the draw of a new OS will win consumers in its home country over.

The first 450 phones (yes, just 450 – no typo there) will go on sale on November 27 at a DNA pop-up shop in central Helsinki. DNA is a Finnish carrier, and one of the first companies to back the Jolla project, so this makes sense obviously.

The aforementioned pop-up shop will only be selling Jolla devices for one evening, after which there will be a wider launch in early December, also through DNA stores (more of them, this time). Around 50,000 units of the Jolla smartphone are reported to have been pre-ordered, although an official number isn’t available.

“Jolla has attracted an enormous amount of interest. Because the basic idea with Jolla is to develop the phone in co-creation spirit with the users, it seemed like the right thing to offer the first phones to those who had displayed an interest in them as soon as the first phones become available,” said DNA’s Business Director Cedric Kamtsan in a statement.

There's no word on a precise launch date outside of Finland yet, but the company has previously said it aims to sell its device across Europe before the end of 2013.
