While the Apple iPhone
5s and 5c will launch in India today, we’re also about to see
something unprecedented. Reliance Communications is all set to launch the
iPhone 5c and 5s in India on contract pricing. Apple has signed a deal
with Reliance Communications (RCom), who is going to provide the 16GB version
of brand new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c free of cost on a
2-year contract basis in India. RCom will be the first company in India to
provide Smartphone on contract basis as similar to US & UK.
Under the subsidy scheme, the 16GB version of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c would be available at zero
upfront cost, with a monthly fee of Rs. 2,500 for the iPhone 5c and Rs. 2,800
for the iPhone 5s.
This payment comes bundled with free unlimited
calls and SMSes (local and STD across network), apart from zero cost for 3G
data usage. There is also no charge on national roaming. Consumers would be
locked-in into a 24 month long contract and would not be able to switch their
telecom operator before that, according to the report. The non-contract costs
for the 16GB iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c are Rs. 53,500 and Rs. 41,900 respectively.
Commenting on the same, Gurdeep Singh, President
& CEO-Wireless Business, Reliance Communications said, "Apple is an
aspirational phone. We are trying to make it more affordable." "We
are looking forward to an overwhelming response," Singh said. "We are
working consistently to push data services agenda," he added.
The report adds that the 32GB and 64GB versions of the iPhones
would come at an upfront cost of Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 18,000 respectively, with
the monthly payment being the same.
To ensure that the phones are not misused or sold
in grey market before the contract is over, RCom is only offering this deal to
people with ICICI and HDFC credit cards.
