Behold the future! Well, behold a future. This future is one in which we all have smartphones with curved screens. The company announced late Tuesday that the new Galaxy Round incorporates the latest in screen technology, along with other unique features.
Curved displays are on the frontlines of Samsung's innovation war with rivals such as Apple Inc and LG Electronics Inc, as the South Korean firm seeks to expand its lead in the slowing market for high-end smartphones.
The device resembles the Galaxy S3 and S4, but it has slight dip in the middle that causes the phone to curve along a vertical axis. The phone's body itself is rigid, so it doesn't actually flex or bend -- but rather has a stationary curve that is said to fit the contours of a person's face. The company said the curvature lets people controls their apps, music, and photos in a new way.
The phone will run Android 4.3 Jelly Bean on a 2.3GHz quad-core processor, complete with 32GB or 64GB of internal memory under the hood. The Round will also sport a 13-megapixel rear-facing shooter and a 2MP front-facing for video chat, as well as a 2,800 mAh battery. As it stands now, the Galaxy Round is only going on sale in Korea, and will come in “Luxury Brown,” with more color flavors to follow. Exact pricing and availability were not disclosed.
The potential benefit of this screen technology isn't quite clear yet, but Samsung is touting a new feature called "Round Interaction," which allows you to look at information such as missed calls, battery life, and the date and time when you tilt it on a flat surface with the screen off. Samsung also claims that switching between home screens will feel like one continuous transition, and has worked on new tilt- and tap-based interactions for the music and photos apps.
